General Description
This position is responsible for providing technical assistance to the dentists and dental hygienists. This includes a variety of duties from preparing rooms for the patient visit to sterilizing instruments after the appointment. This position is also responsible for providing patient education regarding oral health and documenting procedures in the electronic health record. This position requires OSHA training and is subject to blood and other bodily fluids. In accordance with HIPAA regulations, this position requires full access to Protected Health Information (PHI). Such disclosure is necessary to perform the requirements of the job. Confidentiality of PHI must be maintained.

Working Conditions
The position requires normal range of body motion, hearing and eyesight in order to perform duties of the position. Requires hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate the x-ray machine, dental instruments, keyboard, photocopier, telephone, scanner, calculator and other office equipment. Employee must be able to write, speak, and hear. Employee must be able to read small print both on paper and on a computer screen for long periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Frequent standing and walking required for extended periods of time (7-9 hours). Occasionally you may lift and/or carry items weighing up to 60 pounds, bending, stooping, and stretching. Interaction with others is frequent and can often be disruptive so the ability to multi task is important. This is a medical office environment involving frequent contact with staff and patients. There will be exposure to airborne and bloodborne pathogens, and hazardous materials common in a clinic. Essential Duties
1. Check patients in for dental visits:
     a. perform needed x-rays;
     b. obtain vital signs (i.e. electric and manual blood pressure);
     c. perform needed blood glucose monitoring;
     d. set up instruments for procedures/examinations;
     e. assure all forms are completed for procedures;
     f. reviews health history and transfer this information to the clinical note completely and accurately.
2. Assist dentists and/or dental hygienists in daily clinical and operational activities including but not limited to:
     a. use four-handed practices at chair side;
     b. provide proper instruments during procedure to the dentist;
     c. make chart entries under the direction of the dentist or dental hygienist;
     d. record all finding and treatment plans completely and accurately in the patient’s chart;
     e. actively participate in keeping the provider on schedule.
3. Prepare patients for procedures and ensure that all the appropriate instructions and equipment are arranged and ready.
4. Maintain a clean oral working area prior to, during and post exams/procedures.
5. Promote an atmosphere of good dental and general health by demonstrating good personal oral hygiene.
6. Educate patients on techniques of flossing, brushing, overall oral health, and the role of the dental care team.
7. Clean and sterilize instruments appropriately.
8. Expose x-ray films suitable for diagnostic purposes.
9. Develop, mount, and label films for use in diagnosis.
10. Lab duties include: pour and trim models and fabricating trays.
11. Remove the biohazard trash as needed.
12. Answer patient inquiries related to pain and/or medications.
13. Perform all duties in accordance with OSHA regulations.
14. Distribute and collect Patient Satisfaction Surveys in accordance with organizational policy.
15. Is attentive to patient and provider needs.
16. Attend meetings as required (Joint Staff, Department, etc.).
17. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
1. High school diploma or equivalent is required;
2. Graduation from a dental assisting program (preferred but not required);
3. Experience as a dental assistant (preferred but not required);
4. Must have and maintain CPR certification;
5. Any combination of education and work experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying;
6. Knowledge of dental procedures and terminology (preferred but not required);
7. Spanish Bilingual preferred, but not required;
8. Nitrous trained; or must obtain within one year of employment;
9. Nomad trained; or must obtain within one year of employment;
10. Must have and maintain CPR certification;
11. Social and cultural sensitivity appropriate to ethnically and economically diverse participant- and employee-base.
